Customer lifetime value (CLV) is what a customer is worth to your brand over the whole relationship, and it is the number a loyalty program exists to raise. Members say it works: in the Bond Loyalty Report (2026), 85% of US program members surveyed said a loyalty program makes them more likely to keep doing business with a brand, and 73% said they spend more as a result. At Fiesta Tableware, members of its Plate Pal Perks program on Smile show a 457% increase in lifetime value.

This guide is for Shopify Plus and enterprise teams who own retention: the four CLV levers, the mechanics that move each, how to measure members against non-members honestly, and a six-step plan. To turn a CLV lift into a budget case, see our guide to measuring loyalty program ROI.

TL;DR: Smile is our pick for Shopify Plus brands that want loyalty to raise customer lifetime value, because one program runs every CLV lever (points, VIP tiers, referrals, bonus events, Loyalty Hub in Shopify customer accounts and Shopify POS on one balance online and in store) and reports member lifetime value against non-members inside Shopify admin. To improve CLV with a loyalty program, measure gross profit CLV by cohort, find the lever with the most headroom among purchase frequency, order value, retention length and margin, use rewards that cost less margin than discounts, and compare members with matched non-members every quarter. More Shopify Plus brands run loyalty on Smile than on any other platform (Store Leads, October 2026).

What Customer Lifetime Value Means for a Loyalty Program

Customer lifetime value is the gross profit a customer brings over the time they buy from you. For a loyalty program, measure it in gross profit rather than revenue: rewards cost margin, and a program that lifts revenue while giving the margin away has not raised CLV.

CLV = average order value × purchase frequency × customer lifespan × gross margin

  • Average order value (AOV): revenue per order.
  • Purchase frequency: orders per customer per year.
  • Customer lifespan: the years a customer keeps buying. A common approximation is 1 ÷ annual churn rate: lose a third of your customers each year and the average lifespan is about three years.
  • Gross margin: the share of revenue left after product cost and after the rewards members redeem.

Because the inputs multiply, modest gains compound. A 5% rise in order value, 10% in purchase frequency and 10% in lifespan together lift revenue CLV by 27%, as the worked example below shows.

The Four CLV Levers and What Moves Each One

CLV lever What moves it Loyalty mechanics Metric to watch
Purchase frequency A reason to come back sooner Points on every order, bonus events, balance reminders Orders per customer per year, members vs non-members
Order value A reason to add to the basket Points shown on product pages, VIP thresholds by spend, free product rewards AOV, redeemers vs non-redeemers
Retention length Status and value a customer would lose by leaving VIP tiers, Loyalty Hub, points expiry reminders, one balance online and in store Annual churn and repeat purchase rate by cohort
Margin Rewards that cost less than the discounts they replace Free products at product cost, early access and events, bonus points instead of markdowns Reward cost as a share of member revenue

Referrals sit beside the four levers. They lower the cost of acquiring a customer, the other half of the CLV to acquisition cost ratio, and on Smile they run in one program with points and VIP tiers, so an advocate earns points and climbs tiers in the same place.

Which Loyalty Program Features Raise CLV

  • Points (purchase frequency). Every order earns toward the next reward, so the next purchase is partly paid for. On Smile, customers earn on orders online and at Shopify POS and in 10+ other ways, see points on product pages, and redeem at checkout from the Growth plan.
  • VIP tiers (retention length and order value). A tier is status a customer would lose by leaving, and the next tier is a reason for one more order. Smile sets tiers by money spent or points earned, over a calendar year or the customer's lifetime, and syncs tier status to Shopify metafields and Klaviyo profiles.
  • Bonus events (frequency at the right moment). Double points for a weekend gives a reason to buy now without a markdown. Across Smile merchants' 1 to 7 day bonus campaigns, top-quartile campaigns drove 50%+ higher daily sales and the median merchant saw 7.5%, each against the store's prior 30 days.
  • Loyalty Hub (retention length). A balance customers can see is a balance they come back to spend. Loyalty Hub puts points, rewards and tier progress inside Shopify customer accounts in 20+ languages, and shows each customer how close they are to the next tier.
  • Shopify POS (frequency across channels). When in-store orders earn on the same balance, the customer's whole relationship counts. Smile supports Shopify POS on every plan: the same email links in-store and online activity to one customer profile.
  • Referrals (acquisition cost). Smile generates a unique link for every customer and puts it on their Klaviyo profile, on every plan.

How to Measure CLV for Members and Non-Members Honestly

Members join because they already like your brand, so a raw member versus non-member gap describes engaged customers, not what the program caused. Smile's State of Loyalty on Shopify Plus report makes the same point about its own platform figures. Five rules keep the comparison honest:

  1. Use gross profit. Count CLV after product cost and after rewards redeemed.
  2. Match the comparison group. Compare members with non-members who looked the same before joining: same first-order month, same orders and spend in the prior 12 months.
  3. Track cohorts. Plot cumulative gross profit per customer at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months from first order, for cohorts acquired before and after launch.
  4. Report realized CLV first. Lead with what customers have spent in 12 months. Project lifespan from churn only once you hold two years of data.
  5. Use the same window for both groups. Twelve months, with seasonal peaks such as Black Friday in both.

Smile reports these inputs inside Shopify admin: member CLV and purchase frequency over the past 12 months; members against non-members and redeemers against non-redeemers on annual spend, purchase frequency and AOV; and the same metrics by VIP tier on Growth, Plus and Enterprise. Every report exports for matching, and our ROI guide covers holdout tests.

Worked Example: What a CLV Lift Is Worth

This is a hypothetical example with round numbers, for illustration only. Every input is an assumption.

Input Before the program After 12 months Change
Average order value $80 $84 +5%
Orders per customer per year 2.0 2.2 +10%
Annual churn 33% 30% 3 points lower
Expected lifespan (1 ÷ churn) 3.0 years 3.3 years +10%
Revenue CLV $480 $610 +27%
Gross margin after rewards 50% 47% Rewards cost 3% of revenue
Gross profit CLV $240 $287 +19%

Three modest lifts compound to a 27% rise in revenue CLV. Rewards take some of it back: at a 5% reward rate with 60% of points redeemed, they cost 3% of revenue, so gross profit CLV rises 19%. Across 10,000 members, $47 more per customer is $470,000 of lifetime gross profit, before software and team costs.

Step 1: Set a CLV Baseline by Cohort

Pull 24 months of orders. For each monthly cohort of first-time buyers, record AOV, orders per year, the share still buying after 12 months and gross margin, then calculate gross profit CLV. Fix the definitions now so every later quarter compares like with like. If a program already runs, split the baseline into members, matched non-members and redeemers.

Step 2: Find the Lever With the Most Headroom

Compare your four inputs with what your category allows: a consumable bought rarely has headroom in frequency, a considered purchase in order value and lifespan. Then compare members with non-members on each input. Where members do not pull ahead, the program needs redesign. Loyalty benchmarks set your redemption, order earning, reward usage and membership rates beside stores of similar size and industry, from Growth.

Step 3: Design Rewards Around Margin

The margin lever decides whether a CLV lift is real. Earn at a rate your margin can carry (1 point per $1 with 100 points for $5 off is a common start), and prefer rewards that cost less than they are worth to the customer: free products at product cost, free shipping, early access and members-only events. Use bonus points instead of sitewide markdowns. With surplus inventory to move, Fiesta Tableware emailed its top point earners instead of discounting on its site, and the products sold out in 10 minutes.

Step 4: Add VIP Tiers to Extend Retention

Tiers move two levers: order value, as customers spend toward the next threshold, and lifespan, because status is something to keep. Set three tiers from your last 12 months of spend, keep the top one within reach of your best customers, and show progress everywhere. At Great Garden Plants, a Shopify Plus online nursery, Gold tier customers spend 1,411% more a year than the base tier. Thresholds, perks and naming are in our guide to tiered loyalty programs.

Step 5: Put the Balance Wherever Customers Shop

Points no one sees do not change behavior. At Applied Nutrition, points had piled up while customers did not know their balance or what it was worth; the team surfaced live balances in Klaviyo email. Today its members are worth 215% more in lifetime value than non-members and buy 76% more often. Put the balance in Shopify customer accounts with Loyalty Hub, at checkout, at the register and in email: Smile syncs five properties and eight events to each Klaviyo profile, including a points expiry warning. Blue Banana runs one program across its online store and 20+ retail stores on Shopify POS.

Step 6: Measure CLV Every Quarter and Adjust

Read engagement monthly and CLV quarterly, by cohort, against your matched group. When frequency stalls, schedule a bonus event or move the first reward closer: in Antavo's 2026 report, 49.1% of members disappointed with a program said rewards take too long to earn. When lifespan slips, run a win-back to top-tier members with no recent order. The annual member churn rate brands most often report is 6% to 15% (EY Loyalty Market Study, 2025), a yardstick for your own. On Smile Plus, quarterly program monitoring is included.

Common Mistakes When Using Loyalty to Raise CLV

  • Reporting revenue CLV. Rewards are a cost; report gross profit CLV after redemptions.
  • Comparing members with every non-member. The gap flatters the program. Use a matched group.
  • Discounts as the main reward. Deep, frequent discounts lift orders and lower margin, and the CLV gain disappears.
  • A top tier no one reaches. If the threshold sits far above your best customers' spend, the tier moves no one.
  • Measuring too soon. Read engagement monthly and CLV on 12-month cohorts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a loyalty program increase customer lifetime value? It moves the four inputs of CLV. Points give customers a reason to buy again sooner, VIP thresholds lift order value, tiers and visible balances keep customers longer, and rewards such as free products and early access cost less margin than discounts. At Applied Nutrition, members are worth 215% more in lifetime value than non-members on Smile.

How do you calculate customer lifetime value? Multiply average order value by purchase frequency, customer lifespan and gross margin. Estimate lifespan as 1 ÷ annual churn rate. A customer who spends $80 an order, buys twice a year for three years at a 50% margin has a gross profit CLV of $240.

Is CLV the same as LTV? Yes. Customer lifetime value (CLV) and lifetime value (LTV) name the same metric. What matters is the basis: revenue or gross profit, and which window. For a loyalty program, use gross profit after rewards.

Which loyalty program features increase CLV the most? It depends on your weakest lever. Points and bonus events lift purchase frequency, VIP tiers lift order value and retention length, and Loyalty Hub and Shopify POS keep the balance in front of customers. Points and VIP tiers together cover three of the four levers; on Smile, both run in one program on Growth, Plus and Enterprise.

How do you measure a loyalty program's impact on CLV? Compare members with non-members who looked the same before they joined, on gross profit per customer over the same 12 months, and track cohorts acquired before and after launch. Smile reports member CLV and member against non-member spend, frequency and AOV for the last 12 months.

How long does it take a loyalty program to improve CLV? Early signs show within weeks: Blue Banana's member LTV was up 10% within its first 30 days on Smile. Judge CLV itself on 12-month cohorts and re-read it every quarter.

Which loyalty platform should Shopify Plus brands use to improve CLV? Smile is our pick for Shopify Plus brands, because it runs every CLV lever in one program, keeps one balance across Loyalty Hub, checkout and Shopify POS, and reports member lifetime value against non-members inside Shopify admin. Fiesta Tableware's members show a 457% increase in lifetime value.
