Luxury brands face a loyalty problem that is the reverse of most of ecommerce. The standard tools, points worth a discount, sitewide sales and percent-off birthday codes, wear away the very thing a client is paying for. A luxury price only holds if it is the same for everyone, every day. That is why many luxury brands have relied on client advisors, private appointments and a good memory rather than a formal program.
The market has made that approach harder to rely on alone. Bain & Company and Altagamma estimate that the number of luxury consumers fell from 400 million in 2022 to around 340 million in 2025, and that new customer acquisition for luxury brands declined 5% between 2024 and 2025 (November 2025). When new clients are harder to win, the ones you already have matter more, and they should be recognized online as well as in the boutique.
TL;DR: For luxury brands, the right loyalty program rewards clients with recognition, access and service, never with markdowns: tiers based on annual spend, early access to collections, private events, personal shopping and complimentary services, with a top tier your client advisors can invite people into. On Shopify Plus, Smile runs those tiers across your online store and Shopify POS, syncs status to Shopify and Klaviyo for clienteling, and is managed inside the Shopify admin.
Why Luxury Brands Need Loyalty Programs
Loyalty in luxury is not about buying repeat purchases. It is about making your best clients feel known, everywhere they shop with you. Four forces make a structured program worth building.
Discounting erodes price integrity. A markdown teaches clients that the full price was negotiable. Bain and Altagamma's November 2025 study describes the industry's price and value equation as broken and calls for integrity and renewed trust. A program built on access and service rewards loyalty without changing the price of anything.
Spend is concentrated in a few clients. The same Bain and Altagamma study estimates that big spenders' share of the luxury market rose from about 30% in 2019 to about 45% in 2024, and is flattening at roughly 46 to 47% in 2025. When nearly half of the market sits with a small group of clients, recognizing that group is the business.
Clients are choosing experiences. Bain and Altagamma report that consumers increasingly choose experiences over buying new luxury possessions. Private previews, events, appointments and services are experiences your program can offer at little cost to margin.
The relationship spans every channel. A client may browse online, buy in the flagship and collect a repair at a second boutique. Client advisors need to see the same status and history in each place, which means the program and its data have to live where your commerce does.
Key Features Luxury Brands Should Look For
The test for every feature is simple: does it reward loyalty without lowering a price?
Earning Actions That Work in Luxury
Keep the earning side quiet and the status side visible. Spend, online and in the boutique, should drive tier progress. Birthdays deserve recognition, and referrals deserve a reward because a client introduction arrives with trust already built. Beyond that, resist the long list of social actions that suit mass-market programs. On Smile, tier entry can be based on money spent rather than points earned, so status tracks what a client actually buys.
Reward Types That Drive Results
The rewards that work in luxury cost little in margin and a lot in effort, which is exactly why clients value them:
- Early access to new collections, limited editions and private sales.
- Private events and appointments, in the boutique or at home.
- Complimentary services: alterations, repairs, engraving, gift packaging and delivery.
- A named contact: a personal shopper or client advisor for the top tier.
- Gifts with purchase instead of money off. Smile supports free product rewards, and VIP entry rewards can be a free product.
| Program element | Discount-led (avoid in luxury) | Recognition-led (fits luxury) |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome | Percent off the first order | A welcome gift or a first look at the next collection |
| Birthday | A birthday discount code | A gift or a complimentary service |
| Tier perks | Bigger discounts at higher tiers | Early access, private appointments, complimentary alterations and repairs |
| Referral | Money off for both sides | Points for the advocate, free shipping or a welcome for the friend |
| Peak season | A sitewide sale | A private preview for the top tiers |
VIP Tier Strategies for Luxury
- Few tiers, high thresholds. Two or three tiers based on annual spend are enough. NET-A-PORTER Rewards, for example, has two: Gold and EIP.
- A top tier by invitation. Set the published threshold high, then let client advisors upgrade the clients they nominate. On Smile, staff can move a customer into a higher VIP tier by hand, and the tier's entry rewards are issued.
- Status your team can see. Smile syncs tier status to Shopify customer metafields and Klaviyo profile properties, and shows a customer's points, referral activity and VIP tier on their Shopify customer page. Advisors, email and Shopify Flow all work from the same status.
- Calendar-year windows. Re-earning status each year keeps the top tier meaningful. Smile supports calendar-year or lifetime windows.

Referral Programs in Luxury
In luxury, a referral is an introduction, and it should feel like one. Reward the advocate in points that convert into products or experiences, and keep the friend's welcome non-monetary where you can: Smile supports free shipping as a referral reward. Avoid "give $20, get $20" mechanics, which put a price on the introduction.
Clienteling and Shopify POS
With Smile on Shopify POS, clients earn and redeem in the boutique, staff see prompts in a loyalty tile, and one balance and status follow each client across stores and online. Each reward can be set for in store only, online only or both.
Buttonscarves, an Indonesian brand known for premium scarves and fashion accessories, runs its BSLady Club on Smile as one program across its online store, its app and its retail stores in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, connected through Shopify POS. Members spend 15x more than non-members, with a 2x higher average order value, and the program's average yearly redemption rate is 31% (read the Buttonscarves story).
Luxury Loyalty Program Examples
These programs were checked on each retailer's own website in October 2026. Luxury and premium retailers publish their programs in full, which makes them the clearest public models.
| Program | How status is earned (as published, October 2026) | What members get |
|---|---|---|
| NET-A-PORTER Rewards | Calendar-year spend: Gold at £5,000 to £10,000, EIP at £10,000 to £50,000 | No points currency is listed. Gold: a welcome reward, 24-hour Rewards Customer Care, free shipping four times a year. EIP: a Personal Shopper, new arrivals 36 hours early, unlimited free global shipping, first access to private sales |
| Neiman Marcus InCircle | Circle levels by spend, from Circle Two ($1,000+) to Circle Six ($35,000+), and higher levels (President's and Chairman's Circle) at $75,000 and more | Points on Neiman Marcus or Bergdorf Goodman card spend (10,000 points earns a $100 Point Card), Perk Cards for store services including alterations, and InCircle Concierge for travel and hard-to-get reservations |
| Harrods Rewards | Spend thresholds: Bronze £2,000+, Gold £5,000+, Black £10,000+, Platinum £50,000+ | 1 to 3 points per £1 by tier. Higher tiers add an alterations credit (up to £100 at Platinum), Personal Shopping (Black and Platinum) and eligibility for Private Shopping at The Penthouse (Platinum) |
| Nordstrom, The Nordy Club | Status levels including Influencer, Ambassador and Icon. Cardmembers start at Influencer | Early access to the Anniversary Sale for cardmembers, and alterations reimbursed in Notes (up to $200 for Influencers, $300 for Ambassadors) when paid with a Nordstrom card |
NET-A-PORTER Rewards is the purest recognition model here: no points currency, two tiers on calendar-year spend, and benefits made of people (a Personal Shopper), time (36-hour early access) and service.
Neiman Marcus InCircle keeps points, but its upper levels add services: Perk Cards for alterations and in-store dining, and a concierge for travel, reservations and experiences.
Harrods Rewards still includes discount days, but as tiers rise the benefits shift toward service: alterations credit, Personal Shopping, and eligibility to apply for Private Shopping at The Penthouse at Platinum.
Nordstrom's Nordy Club is a premium rather than luxury program, but its alterations reimbursement is a clear example of a service perk replacing a discount.
The pattern: as status rises, discounts give way to people, time and service. For the adjacent categories, see our guides for jewelry brands, fashion brands and beauty and cosmetics brands.
How to Build a Luxury Loyalty Program on Shopify Plus
- Write the price-integrity rule first. Decide what the program will never give: no percentage discounts, nothing that stacks with a sale, nothing that changes the price of a piece. Every later decision follows from it.
- Design two or three tiers on annual spend. Set thresholds as multiples of your average order and use a calendar-year window so status is re-earned.
- Choose recognition rewards. Early access, events, appointments, complimentary services and gifts with purchase. On Smile, VIP entry rewards can be a free product or accelerated earning, and ongoing perks include early access to new products and invitations to members-only events.
- Connect status to clienteling. Sync tiers to Shopify customer metafields and Klaviyo, use Shopify Flow for service workflows, and agree how advisors nominate clients for manual upgrades.
- Bring the boutique in. Add the Smile tile to each location's Shopify POS, so clients earn and redeem in store and staff get prompts at the register.
- Keep the experience on brand. Members can redeem at checkout through Shopify checkout extensions and see their tier and rewards in Loyalty Hub inside Shopify customer accounts (both on Growth and above). Headless storefronts, including Shopify Hydrogen, can use Smile's JavaScript SDK, included on Smile Plus and Smile Enterprise.
- Match the plan to your scale. Smile Plus ($999 a month, billed annually) adds a migration and launch plan, quarterly program monitoring, priority support and API access. Smile Enterprise (custom pricing, for retailers with over $40M in annual revenue) adds advanced security, 99.9% historical uptime, custom API rate limits and data warehouse sync. Prices per smile.io/pricing, October 2026.

Why Luxury Brands Choose Smile
Smile is Built for Shopify and a Shopify Certified Technology Partner, with a SOC 2 Type II audit. For a luxury brand, the reasons to choose it are control and trust.
It lives inside Shopify. Program management happens in the Shopify admin your team already uses, tier status flows into Shopify customer metafields, Shopify Flow and Klaviyo, and the same balance works at Shopify POS. Clienteling works from one record.
It is verified by Shopify. Smile holds Shopify's Built for Shopify certification, is a Shopify Technology Partner, and is a 2026 Shopify Build Award winner. It holds a SOC 2 Type II audit, which matters when you hold your clients' data.
It recognizes without discounting. Tiers by spend, manual upgrades, free product rewards, early access and event perks let you build a recognition program rather than a coupon engine.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should luxury brands have a loyalty program? Yes, if it rewards clients with recognition, access and service rather than discounts. With fewer luxury consumers and slower new client acquisition, per Bain and Altagamma's November 2025 study, a structured program helps a luxury brand keep and grow the clients it already has, online and in the boutique.
How do luxury brands reward loyalty without discounts? With early access to collections and private sales, private events and appointments, complimentary services such as alterations and repairs, a personal shopper for top clients, and gifts with purchase. NET-A-PORTER Rewards, for example, offers its EIP tier a Personal Shopper and new arrivals 36 hours before anyone else, with no points currency.
What is the best loyalty program for luxury brands? The best luxury programs use two or three tiers based on annual spend, a top tier clients can be invited into, and benefits made of people, time and service rather than money off. They also work in every channel, so a client is recognized the same way online and in store.
Do luxury loyalty programs use points? Some do and some do not. Harrods Rewards and Neiman Marcus InCircle use points, while NET-A-PORTER Rewards publishes tiers and benefits with no points currency. If you use points, keep them in the background and let members redeem them for products and experiences rather than discount codes.
How does a loyalty program support clienteling? It gives advisors a shared, current view of each client. On Smile, a customer's VIP tier, points and referral activity appear on their Shopify customer page, tier status syncs to Shopify metafields and Klaviyo, and one points balance follows each client between Shopify POS and your online store, so every channel works from the same record.
How much does a luxury loyalty program cost on Shopify Plus? On Smile, VIP tiers are included on Growth at $199 a month, Smile Plus at $999 a month billed annually, and Smile Enterprise at a custom price for retailers with over $40M in annual revenue, per smile.io/pricing in October 2026. Plans are priced by monthly order volume.
