Best Referral Program Apps for Shopify (2026)

A referral program pays customers to do what your best ones already do: recommend you to friends. On Shopify, two kinds of apps run them. Referral and affiliate apps are built for that one job. Loyalty platforms run referrals next to points and VIP tiers, so referral rewards feed the same program.

This guide compares both kinds, using each app's Shopify App Store listing, pricing page and help documentation as of October 21, 2026. We make Smile, one of the apps below, and we have tried to be fair to the rest.

TL;DR: For Shopify Plus and enterprise brands that want referrals to feed a loyalty program, Smile is built for it: referrals, points and VIP tiers run in one program, with automatic fraud checks, Klaviyo sync and Shopify POS. For a standalone referral program, ReferralCandy is a strong choice; UpPromote and Social Snowball are built for affiliate and creator programs; and Extole serves enterprise brands that want a dedicated referral platform priced by revenue.

What We Evaluated

We judged each app on seven criteria:

  1. Fraud protection. Does the app check for self-referrals, look-alike or throwaway emails and repeated referrals from one IP address, and does a reward wait for a real first order?
  2. Dual-sided rewards. Can you reward both the friend's first order and the advocate who sent them?
  3. POS and omnichannel. Does the listing say it works with Shopify POS?
  4. Klaviyo. Do referral links and referral events reach Klaviyo profiles and flows?
  5. Analytics. Can you see referred revenue and top referrers, and export them?
  6. Pricing model. Flat pricing by order volume, or a success fee on referral sales?
  7. Shopify certifications. The Built for Shopify badge and a listing in Shopify's technology partner directory.

Every app in this guide lists Klaviyo under "Works with" on its App Store listing (October 21, 2026), so the difference is depth, covered below.

1. Smile: Built for Referrals Inside a Loyalty Program

Smile runs referrals as part of one loyalty program, so the same advocate earns points, climbs VIP tiers and refers friends from one on-brand experience (Smile referrals). Offers are two-sided: the friend gets a reward on their first order, and the advocate earns theirs once that order is placed, in points, discounts or free shipping.

Fraud checks run automatically. Smile flags referrals where the advocate and friend emails look alike, the friend's email is temporary, many referrals come from one IP address, the order is not the customer's first, or the advocate placed the order; flagged referrals are blocked and wait in a Blocked column for review (Smile Help Center, October 2026). Each customer's referral link syncs to their Klaviyo profile, and a Referral Completed event can trigger Klaviyo flows. Top referrers export as a segment for advocacy campaigns.

ALP Pouches built its program on Smile referrals and has produced more than 7,000 referral-driven orders at a 6.59% referral conversion rate (ALP Pouches story).

Best for: Shopify Plus and enterprise brands that want referrals, points and VIP tiers in one program, measured together.

Pricing: The referral program is on every plan. Growth is $199 a month, Smile Plus $999 a month on annual billing, and Smile Enterprise is custom (smile.io/pricing).

2. ReferralCandy: Best Standalone Referral App

ReferralCandy has been on the Shopify App Store since 2010 and runs referral and affiliate programs in one app. Rewards include custom coupon codes, store credit, cash and gift cards, and its site shows two-sided offers where the friend and the advocate both get a reward. Its FAQ says it screens for "self-referrals, unusual volume and other suspicious patterns before rewards go out." The listing holds the Built for Shopify badge and works with Shopify POS, Klaviyo, Recharge, Loop and Skio (October 2026).

The pricing model matters at scale: every plan includes all features, and the success fee on referral sales falls as the monthly fee rises.

Best for: Brands that want a dedicated referral program without changing their loyalty setup.

Pricing: Basic $9 a month plus a 10.5% success fee, Grow $79 plus 3.5%, Scale $249 plus 1.5%, Enterprise $799 plus 0.25% (App Store listing and referralcandy.com/pricing, October 2026).

3. Yotpo Loyalty: Best for Brands on Yotpo Reviews

Yotpo's loyalty app includes a referral program on its free plan, and fraud prevention is listed among Pro plan features on its pricing page. The draw is Yotpo Reviews: brands already using it can run referrals, points and reviews with one vendor. Yotpo is in Shopify's technology partner directory; its loyalty listing does not carry the Built for Shopify badge (October 2026). Read Smile vs Yotpo for the full comparison.

Best for: Brands committed to Yotpo Reviews.

Pricing: Free for stores under 100 monthly orders, Pro from $199 a month, Premium by quote.

4. LoyaltyLion: Best for Tightly Controlled Referral Rules

LoyaltyLion's refer-a-friend rule gives the friend a voucher for their first purchase and the advocate points that stay pending until an approval period ends. Merchants set a minimum spend, can block referrals from the same IP address, and can cap referrals per customer each month; returned orders reverse pending points (LoyaltyLion help center, October 2026). It is a Shopify technology partner without the Built for Shopify badge.

Best for: Brands that want referral rewards held until orders are confirmed.

Pricing: Free up to 400 monthly orders, Classic $199 a month, Advanced and Plus by quote.

5. Rivo: Best for Developer-Led DTC Teams

Rivo's referral program starts on its $49 Scale plan. Its referral page describes blocking self-referrals, including "+" email variants, and limiting referrals to one per household IP address. A developer toolkit and month-to-month billing appeal to technical teams (rivo.io, October 2026). As of October 21, 2026, Rivo's listing does not show the Built for Shopify badge and Rivo is not in Shopify's technology partner directory. See Smile vs Rivo.

Best for: DTC teams with developers who want referrals inside a configurable loyalty app.

Pricing: Free, Essential $15, Scale $49 (capped at $499), Plus $499, Enterprise custom.

6. UpPromote: Best for Affiliate and Creator Programs

UpPromote is an affiliate platform with a customer referral program on its paid plans. The listing describes "anti-leak discount links, fraud detection & block lists," creator discovery, automated PayPal payouts and tax forms. It holds the Built for Shopify badge, works with Shopify Hydrogen headless storefronts, and does not list Shopify POS (October 2026).

Best for: Brands that run influencer and affiliate programs alongside customer referrals.

Pricing: Free plan; Growth $29.99 a month plus 2% of referral sales, Professional $89.99 plus 1.5%, Enterprise $199.99 plus 1%.

7. Social Snowball: Best for Post-Purchase Affiliate Enrollment

Social Snowball turns customers into affiliates automatically when they make a purchase and pays commissions in cash or gift cards in bulk. Its listing promises to "Eliminate affiliate code leaks & coupon abuse," and it works with Klaviyo, TikTok Shop and Tremendous (October 2026). It does not hold the Built for Shopify badge.

Best for: Brands that want every buyer to become a commissioned affiliate.

Pricing: Snow Day $249 a month plus 3% of affiliate revenue; Blizzard from $899 a month with no usage charges.

8. Extole: Best for Enterprise Referral Programs

Extole calls itself "The offer management platform for referral and loyalty in the AI era" and names brands such as Athleta, ASICS and Tatcha on its site. Its Shopify app, launched September 24, 2024, targets Shopify Plus and Hydrogen stores with checkout extensions, A/B testing and real-time Shopify discounts, and works with Klaviyo, Braze, Iterable and Attentive. The listing has no reviews yet (October 2026).

Best for: Enterprise brands that want a dedicated referral platform with testing and their own marketing stack.

Pricing: $999 a month under $10M in annual revenue, $2,500 a month from $10M to $40M, and $44,000 a year from $41M to $80M (App Store listing, October 2026).

Also Worth a Look: BON and Joy

BON Loyalty includes an "Anti-Cheat referral program" on its free plan, and Joy includes a referral program with fraud prevention on its free plan. Both hold the Built for Shopify badge and work with Shopify POS, and neither is in Shopify's technology partner directory (October 2026). Compare them in Smile vs BON Loyalty and Smile vs Joy Loyalty.

What to Look for in a Shopify Referral App

  1. Fraud checks that run before rewards go out. Test for self-referral first: one person referring themselves with a second email. Ask how the app detects it, whether it blocks automatically, and where you review flagged referrals.
  2. Dual-sided rewards you can tune. A discount for the friend's first order and a reward for the advocate after that order lands. Rewards in points give the advocate a reason to come back and spend them.
  3. Shopify POS. If you have stores, check that the listing works with Shopify POS, so the same customer is recognized in store and online.
  4. Klaviyo depth. Every app here connects to Klaviyo. Check whether each customer's referral link lands on their Klaviyo profile and whether referral events can trigger flows.
  5. Analytics you can act on. Referred revenue, top referrers and exports, ideally next to the rest of your retention reporting.
  6. A pricing model that fits your margins. Success fees grow with referral revenue; flat order-volume pricing does not.

Where Smile Fits

Smile treats referrals as one part of a loyalty program rather than a separate tool. A referral earns the advocate points, and those points can count toward VIP tiers when tiers are based on points earned. That keeps acquisition and retention in one place: one set of rewards, one program experience, and one dashboard where loyalty revenue includes referral rewards.

Klaviyo is where that shows up day to day. Smile syncs each customer's referral link, points balance and VIP tier to their Klaviyo profile. Kelly Spencer, Communications Marketing Manager at Death Wish Coffee, puts it this way: "That integration is great because I can dynamically include people's referral codes and points balances in emails that remind them if they have rewards" (Death Wish Coffee story).

If you need cash commissions for creators and affiliates, a dedicated affiliate app is built for that, and many brands run one alongside their loyalty program. Smile rewards customer referrals with points, discounts and free shipping. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best referral program app for Shopify? For brands that want referrals inside a loyalty program, Smile is built for it: referrals, points and VIP tiers run together, with automatic fraud checks and Klaviyo sync. For a standalone referral program, ReferralCandy is a strong option; for affiliate and creator programs, UpPromote or Social Snowball.

Should I use a referral app or a loyalty app with referrals? Use a loyalty platform with referrals if you want each new customer to join your points and VIP program and you want one place to measure retention. Use a dedicated referral or affiliate app if you pay cash commissions to creators or run affiliate programs at scale.

How do Shopify referral apps prevent fraud? Most check for self-referrals, look-alike or temporary emails and many referrals from one IP address, and hold the advocate's reward until a real first order is placed. Smile blocks flagged referrals automatically and lists them for review; LoyaltyLion holds points pending an approval period.

How much do Shopify referral apps cost? As of October 2026, ReferralCandy runs from $9 a month plus a 10.5% success fee, UpPromote has a free plan and paid plans from $29.99 plus 2%, Social Snowball starts at $249 a month plus 3%, and Extole starts at $999 a month. Smile includes referrals on every plan.

What is the difference between a referral program and an affiliate program? A referral program rewards existing customers for bringing in friends, usually with discounts, points or store credit. An affiliate program pays creators, influencers or partners a commission on the sales they drive, often in cash. Several apps in this guide, including ReferralCandy and UpPromote, run both.

Do referral apps work with Shopify POS? Some do. Smile, ReferralCandy, Yotpo Loyalty, LoyaltyLion, Rivo, BON and Joy list Shopify POS under "Works with" on their App Store listings; UpPromote, Social Snowball and Extole do not, as of October 21, 2026.
