A referral program is a way for a brand to reward existing customers for recommending it to friends: each customer gets a unique link to share, the friend gets an offer on their first order, and the customer earns a reward once that order is placed.

It turns word of mouth into a channel a brand can track and pay for per result. This page covers how referral programs work step by step, the main reward types, how referrals differ from affiliate and loyalty programs, how they fit inside a loyalty program and what to measure, for brands on Shopify and Shopify Plus.

TL;DR: A referral program, also called a customer referral or refer-a-friend program, rewards customers (advocates) for bringing in new customers: the friend gets a first-order offer through the advocate's unique link, and the advocate earns a reward once that order is placed and passes fraud checks. Smile is the loyalty platform that runs referrals inside one program with points and VIP tiers for Shopify Plus and enterprise brands, so advocates earn points that bring them back and can count toward VIP status, with automatic fraud checks and every referral link synced to Klaviyo. More Shopify Plus brands run loyalty on Smile than on any other platform (Store Leads, October 2026).

How a Referral Program Works

Every referral program has two people and one rule. The advocate is the existing customer who shares. The friend is the new customer. The rule sets what each one gets, and when. On Smile, a referral runs in six steps (Smile Help Center, November 2026):

  1. The advocate shares a unique link. Each customer has their own referral link. They share it from the loyalty panel by email, Facebook or X (with WhatsApp and Messenger on mobile), from the Referrals section of Loyalty Hub in Shopify customer accounts, or by copying it into any message.
  2. The friend claims the offer. Clicking the link opens a popup that asks for the friend's email address, and the friend's reward arrives by email as a one-time-use discount code. The offer is only for people completely new to the store: no account and no previous order, guest checkout included.
  3. The friend lands and shops. The link opens the store's homepage by default, or any page the brand sets, such as a collection of bestsellers.
  4. The order is attributed. The referral completes when the friend's first order is marked Paid on Shopify. The friend does not have to use the code: an order placed with the email address they claimed the offer with is enough.
  5. Fraud checks run. Smile checks each referral when the friend claims the offer and again when the friend orders with the code. It blocks referrals where the advocate and friend emails are similar, the friend's email is temporary or throwaway, one friend email has claimed several recent referrals, many referrals come from one IP address, the order is not the customer's first, or the order is placed by the advocate or someone with the advocate's name. Blocked referrals wait in a Blocked column for the brand to review, unblock or cancel.
  6. The advocate is rewarded. The advocate's reward arrives by email and shows in their loyalty panel and Loyalty Hub. If the friend's order is fully refunded, Smile cancels the referral automatically and voids any unused codes.

An advocate can refer as many friends as they like and earns a reward for every completed referral.

Types of Referral Rewards

Referral programs are usually two-sided: the friend and the advocate both get something, as in all ten programs in our review of ecommerce referral programs. What changes is the currency each side is paid in.

Reward type How it works Good for Example (November 2026)
Two-sided discount Both sides get the same amount or percentage off An offer that is easy to explain and share Huel (US): "Give 25%, Get 25%", 25% off the friend's first order and 25% off for the advocate when the friend uses the code
Points The friend gets a first-order discount; the advocate earns loyalty points Brands with a loyalty program, since points bring the advocate back to spend them CARZILLA (on Smile): 7,000 points per referred friend and $5 off for the friend
Store credit or gift card The advocate gets credit to spend on a later order Higher-priced categories where returns matter Back Market: $10 off a friend's first order of $100 or more, and $20 in store credit for the advocate, released after the return window closes
Free product or free shipping A product or free shipping instead of money off Sampling a hero product or removing a first-order barrier On Smile, either side can get a free product or free shipping
Cash A cash payout per referral Affiliate and partner programs more than customer referrals None of the ten programs in the same review paid the advocate cash

On Smile, the friend's reward is a first-order offer, because the friend has no account yet to hold points or credit. The friend can get an amount off, a percentage off, free shipping or a free product, and the advocate any of those plus a gift card, store credit or points.

How big should the reward be? Smile's help center suggests a value of 10% to 20% of average order value, rounded to the nearest $5, and the same value on both sides: at a $100 average order, $10 to $20 each. It recommends paying the advocate in points when the brand also runs a points program, and a minimum purchase on the friend's discount to balance the reward against what the friend spends.

Why Brands Run Referral Programs

A referral reaches a friend through someone they trust, and the brand pays only when a new customer buys. Research on recommendations and referred customers points the same way:

Finding Source
88% of global respondents trust recommendations from people they know more than any other channel Nielsen Trust in Advertising Study, 2021 (40,000+ respondents, September 2021)
68.5% of customers say they refer friends Antavo Global Customer Loyalty Report, 2026
Referred customers had a higher retention rate, and their average value was at least 16% higher than that of comparable customers who were not referred Schmitt, Skiera and Van den Bulte, Journal of Marketing, January 2011 (about 10,000 customers of a German bank, tracked for almost three years)

The last study comes from banking, not ecommerce, and its authors found the gap varied by customer segment, so read it as direction rather than a forecast. The cost model is the other draw: unlike ads bought per click or per impression, a referral reward is paid only after a new customer orders. Referral vs Affiliate vs Loyalty Programs

The three are often confused because each pays people for behavior a brand wants. They differ in who earns, what they earn and why.

What differs Referral program Affiliate program Loyalty program
Who earns Existing customers Creators, publishers and partners, often not customers Existing customers
What they earn Discounts, points, store credit or free products, spent with the brand A commission on each sale, usually paid in cash Points, VIP status and member perks
What triggers it A referred friend's first order Each sale through the affiliate's link or code Purchases and actions such as reviews or birthdays
Main goal New customers through people they trust Reach through other people's audiences Repeat purchases and retention
How it is tracked A unique link per customer Affiliate links and codes The customer account and order history

Many brands run a customer referral program and a creator affiliate program side by side. Referrals and loyalty are the closer pair: both reward the same people, existing customers, which is why Smile runs referrals inside the loyalty program rather than as a separate tool. How Referrals Fit Inside a Loyalty Program

A standalone referral program pays an advocate once. Inside a loyalty program, the same referral keeps working:

  • Points bring the advocate back. A points reward is spent with the brand, so the advocate returns to redeem it. At CARZILLA, where members earn 50 points per $1, one referral's 7,000 points equal the points from $140 of orders (CARZILLA story).
  • Referral points can move advocates up VIP tiers. On Smile, when tiers use points earned as the milestone, points from referral rewards count toward VIP progress, and redeeming points does not lower it (VIP tiers, from the Growth plan). Our guide to creating VIP tiers that drive revenue covers milestone design.
  • One place to share. The referral link sits in the same loyalty panel and Loyalty Hub as the points balance and tier, so customers see one program, not two.
  • One profile in email. Smile syncs each customer's referral link to Klaviyo as the Smile Referral URL property and sends Referral Started and Referral Completed events to trigger flows (Smile and Klaviyo). Kelly Spencer, Communications Marketing Manager at Death Wish Coffee, puts it this way: "That integration is great because I can dynamically include people's referral codes and points balances in emails that remind them if they have rewards" (Death Wish Coffee story).
  • One set of numbers. Referral rewards count in Smile's loyalty-driven revenue, the sales where a Smile discount code was used, next to points redemptions and VIP perks.

Brands that run referrals this way treat them as part of the relationship. Live Bearded has run referrals, points and three VIP tiers as one program on Smile since 2018, with early access to new or limited-edition products for its top tier, All-Stars (Live Bearded story). Death Wish Coffee's Swig League campaign gave coffee subscribers team points for successful referrals, with VIP tiers set up in Smile for the teams to track points activity and referrals.

How to Measure a Referral Program

Smile's referral analytics track five numbers (Smile Help Center, November 2026):

Metric What it tells you How it is calculated
Referral traffic How often customers share and friends click Total clicks on referral links
Referral conversion rate How well the offer and landing page turn clicks into buyers Completed referrals divided by referral clicks
Total referred orders How many sales referrals drive Orders placed by referred customers
Referral share rate How much of the business comes from referrals Orders placed by referred customers, as a share of all orders
Revenue from referred customers What referred customers are worth over time Sales from referred customers, including their later orders

Add two numbers of your own: cost per referred customer (the value of rewards issued for completed referrals, divided by new referred customers) and the repeat purchase rate of referred customers against customers from other channels.

ALP Pouches, which made referrals a core growth mechanic from launch, reports more than 7,000 referral-driven orders at a 6.59% referral conversion rate. Read the numbers as a funnel. High traffic with low conversion points to the offer or the landing page. Low traffic means customers are not sharing, so put the link in post-purchase emails, on product pages and in the customer account. Where Smile Fits

Smile is the loyalty platform that runs referrals, points and VIP tiers as one program for Shopify Plus and enterprise brands (Smile referrals). It brings two-sided rewards, fraud checks at claim and at order, referral links in Loyalty Hub and Klaviyo, and referral analytics beside loyalty revenue; the referral program itself is included on every Smile plan. CARZILLA, a Shopify Plus retailer of premium detailing supplies, runs points, referrals and VIP on Smile Plus, connected to Klaviyo, Stamped.io and Shopify Flow. Smile is Built for Shopify, a Shopify Certified Technology Partner and SOC 2 Type II audited (May 2026).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a referral program? A referral program rewards existing customers for recommending a brand to friends. Each customer shares a unique link; the friend gets an offer on their first order, and the customer earns a reward, such as points, a discount or store credit, once that order is placed.

How do referral programs work? An advocate shares their link, the friend claims a one-time first-order offer with their email address, and the referral completes when the friend's first order is paid. Fraud checks run along the way, and the advocate's reward is issued when the referral completes. On Smile, the friend does not need to use the code: an order placed with the same email address counts.

What is a good referral reward? Smile's help center suggests rewards worth 10% to 20% of average order value, rounded to the nearest $5, with equal value on both sides; "give $10, get $10" is a common setup. If you run a points program, pay the advocate in points, and set a minimum purchase on the friend's discount.

What is the difference between a referral program and an affiliate program? A referral program rewards existing customers for bringing in friends, usually with discounts, points or store credit spent with the brand. An affiliate program pays creators, publishers or partners a commission on the sales they drive, usually in cash. Many brands run both.

Is a referral program part of a loyalty program? It can run on its own or inside one. A standalone referral app pays the advocate once; a referral program inside a loyalty program pays in points that bring the advocate back and, on Smile, can count toward VIP tiers. Smile runs referrals, points and VIP tiers as one program.

How do you prevent referral fraud? Limit the friend's offer to new customers, set a minimum order and issue the advocate's reward only once the friend's order is paid. Smile also blocks referrals automatically on signals such as similar or throwaway emails, many referrals from one IP address and orders placed by the advocate, and cancels a referral when the friend's order is fully refunded.

Does Shopify have a built-in referral program? No. As of October 2026, Shopify has no points, VIP tier or customer referral program of its own; its Shopify Collabs app is built for creator and affiliate programs. Customer referral programs run on apps from the Shopify App Store, such as Smile, which runs referrals inside a loyalty program with points and VIP tiers.
